In its original historical conception, the idea behind “American Exceptionalism” was that, since in its founding, the America nation broke with the Old World culture of inherited social class and political authority, America began life as a potentially classless society in which the traditional distinctions between the ruling class (the “right wing”) versus the ordinary citizen (the ” left wing”) wouldn’t exist since instead of ruling nobility we would have democratic representatives constrained to serving rather than exploiting the masses of normal people who in former times compromised the true, sociological/ demographic “left” (I.e., ordinary citizens who aren’t political or economic elites).
This implies that contemporary America has broken with its historical roots as more and more Americans falsely identify with the “right” or the “left” despite not understanding what this choice actually means.
Partisanship is therefore incompatible with and detrimental to the only meaningful construction of the concept of “American Exceptionalism,” yet perversely the idea itself has now become a partisan tool for undermining true American Exceptionalism in its original historical sense.
